"KNIGHT & DAY": My work is inspired by the issues of corruption and terrorism in society today. I decided to select the Batman in order to illustrate these issues with a character that resonates with the people of today. My main goal was to visualise the theme ot "The world through the eyes of another - past, present, future" by juxtaposing the differing perspectives of Bruce Wayne and his alter-ego, the Batman. Although they are the same person, the actions they take in the parts they play towards the betterment of Gotham city are very different. Bruce attempts to make his city greater through dealing with the governing council and police department, whereas Batman takes matters upon his own hands, acting as a vigilante hero. The Batman and Bruce have been positioned side to side with links to contrasting aspects of their lives placed underneath. Bruce Wayne is a public figure, meeting with politicians and other people of high status under the daylight meanwhile Batman patrols the night, leaping across roof-tops and dealing justitce towards the criminals of Gotham city. Young Bruce is displayed visiting the graves of his parents, signifying Bruce's past, while current-day Bruce and Batman represent the present and future. The Dark Knight is portrayed in contrast to the depressing rain in the gravestone visiting scene, being ignited by fire - representative of an output of anger and frustration - when concussing a criminal. My Wayne is depicted with a red tie around his neck which cascades into dripping blood; the blood trail streaks past gravestones to the murder scene of his parents. This symbolises the vice-grip of trauma which holds Bruce back; choking him with memories of the unjust deaths of his mother and father. Bruce is unable to tackle crime by himself due to the status of his family name, however, operating under his alter-ego, the Batman, he is able to conceal his true identity. Wayne Tower is depicted in the centre, between Bruce and Batman, in order to symbolise the foundation (or centre-piece) of Bruce which is his family name and legacy. Bruce fights crime under the alias of the Batman in order to protect his family name and company. Relinquishing any ties to his family name, he is able to put aside the weakness of his public figure and deal justice to crime under a secret identity; without putting any loved ones in consequential danger. Bruce Wayne by day is in fear of his true identity being discovered and is held back by his family name, whereas the night-crawling Batman symbolises fear and the unknown, intimidating enemies with his sheer appearance and anonymity. With nothing to lose as an ambiguous entity - unlike Wayne, the Batman is allowed to operate without fear in his dealings with evil-doers. This is the juxtaposition of the world through the eyes of Bruce Wayne and the Batman my canvas aims to be representative of.
