Our Story

Our Focus

We aim to be leaders in the New Zealand optics industry by following a simple principle, to focus on you.  We invest in modern technology and talented staff to ensure we can improve people’s lives by providing the best visual solutions possible.

Paterson Burn have been a presence in the Waikato community for over 90 years. We are one of the largest independent optometry groups in New Zealand and are proud to maintain our independence in the ever changing environment of New Zealand optometry. Ensuring our independence means we have the autonomy to decide how we move forward and help shape the industry. We are committed to investing our time and expertise into New Zealand’s optical industry and the community as a whole.

“It is my strong belief that the success of any company lies in its capability to employ dedicated professionals who work together to achieve a common goal. We are doing this by offering all our staff a climate of responsibility, appreciation and respect, enabling everyone to develop to their full potential.” – Adrian Paterson.

History of Paterson Burn

If Paterson Burn is a name that is synonymous with eye care for you, there is a reason behind that! We have over 90 years of history in the Waikato region!

The Paterson Burn story begins in the early 1920’s with Lawrence Andrews Optometrists, a small business located on Victoria Street. The company saw many changes until Adrian Paterson joined the practice in 1971, eventually operating as Adrian Paterson Optometrists – 1978. In 1995 Adrian Paterson merged with Balfour Irvine and Webster to form Paterson Burn Optometrists as it is today. No matter the changing name we have remained consistent in our dedication to providing expert eye care and service to our patients.

For over 20 years the Paterson Burn name has remained synonymous with local eye care. Our team are dedicated to ensuring the company’s original principles of professional local eye care remain unchanged. We now have seven locations in the Waikato, Coromandel and Auckland; as the company grows, our commitment to provide current and future generations of New Zealand residents with superior eye care, is as strong as ever.

In Our Community

Paterson Burn are committed to supporting our local communities. We are pleased to frequently provide support to local schools, sporting organisations and charities within our communities.

We also support the Lion’s club and their relationship with the VOSO charitable trust by forwarding donated glasses to the cause. We are happy to encourage our optometrists to volunteer their time overseas with the initiative.

Since 2013 we have managed and sponsored the Excellence in Art Competition. An annual art competition that is open to all Year 12 and 13 Secondary School Art Students in the Waikato, Coromandel, and Auckland areas. The competition is supported by Creative Waikato and offers prize money to be shared between the student and their school. Every year we are amazed by how these talented students view their world.
