I chose to explore the topic of how we deceive ourselves through perception. When we look in a mirror, we often see not just a pure reflection of ourselves but a mess of skewed perception, an obsession with how others see us, overlaid with our own ideas of imprefection and beauty. This touches on the ideas of body image, body dismorphia, and how society connects beauty so strongly to youth. I represented this idea through a cubist, surrealist version of a reflection to show how our minds are full of so many angles of ourselves and different stages of aging when we look in a mirror. The eyes are the instruments through which we see this distorted version of reality. And yet, our eyes don't see a complete truth either, for light rays can bend and alter in an illusory world. I intended to create a work which reveals more the more you look at it. The background is built up of articles, poems and lyrics about life, beauty, eyes, age and time, and annotated with diagrams, quotes and sketches. I have drawn inspiration from artists such as Picasso, Klimt and Modigliani.
